Big Budget Bookworm Begins Tomorrow

worm_$.jpgThe sequel to the Popcap Games hit Bookworm is going to be available for download tomorrow. While the original was nothing more than an odd twist on a crossword puzzle, Bookworm Adventures will feature Lex the worm vanquishing enemies like vampires and dragons with every word created.

Vampires and dragons in Bookworm? No wonder the sequel is considered to be the most expensive casual game ever developed, costing Popcap Games $700,000. The casual game industry is expected to grow this year to $953 million worldwide, so that $700,000 must be worth it.

It is a bit scary when development costs for casual online web games start creeping towards the million dollar mark. I’m going to assume you can play the game online for free, or download a full version for $30. I can only assume a Xbox Live Arcade version will appear sometime down the road as well. With $700,000 invested, I can imagine the ports will be rollin’ out double-speed.

I just spent over an hour playing this new game, Bookworm Adventures. Fun, varied gameplay and some genuinely entertaining dialog: “Stop trying to hit me and hit me!” and “Yeah! I totally vocabularized you!”

Alas, they’re sorry, but there is no Mac version at this time.
