Wii In Swing

old school assembly.jpg Remember how Nintendo announced that they would have four million Wii units produced by the calendar’s year end? Did you think that sounded pretty good? Well it appears to have just gotten better as Nintendo has reportedly completed production of 2 million units in Q3 alone. Nintendo apparently plans to produce at the very least 7 million Wii consoles in Q4 and it’s certainly plausible to think that they could produce somewhere around 9 million Wii consoles during this time. That would put Wii production in the vicinity of 11 million consoles by the end of the calendar year.

When you think about this, you have to wonder why Nintendo opted for a later release date instead of an earlier one. Apparently, the answer lies in the software department. Nintendo seemingly wanted to make sure that they had enough software for launch. That’s a fine enough excuse for me…but I still think if they had released with just Zelda, Wii Sports, and whatever was available then I would be happily playing until more software came out in the month or so following. What do you think?

    A handful of launch titles would had been just fine for the hardcore audience. With Nintendo trying to reach beyond the hardcore group, they felt the need to have software that would appeal to the softcore gamer too. If Nintendo had a SONY or Microsoft way of doing business I’m sure the Wii would have launched by now. Fortunately, for us, they don’t
