Wii-ality Check: 1st Party $59.99

The Nintendo Wii might be innovative but the pricing structure sure isn’t. On the eve of the Nintendo Wii pre-orders and a day after news that the PS3 is shipping without component cables, Ebgames.com is now listing numerous 1st party Wii titles for $59.99.

The coincidence between the two is that Sony followed Nintendo’s lead with shipping only with an AV cable and Nintendo has now followed everyone else’s lead by shipping 1st Party titles for $59.99. The problem I have with this is not the quality of the game, which should be there, it’s that 1st party content has historically been ten dollars cheaper than 3rd party!

The core system might be cheap (until you account for Wii2 in Spring 2008), but everything else is still going to cost us. I apologize for the negativity of the post but the next generation nickel n’ diming is rediculous. I should note that not all 1st party titles are showing for $59.99, Twilight Princess for example is retailing for $49.99. Still, that might just be because it’s going to be available on the Gamecube as well.

Wow. I guess I was expecting all of the Wii titles to be $50 or lower. That kind of sucks, but at the same time, Nintendo is out to make a profit just like everyone else.

Wow, and it also lists the release date as November 15. November… for a non-launch title? Hmm. Placeholder, anyone?

  • BOOOO!

I’m hating the game industry more and more these days. $60 is WAY too much for a single game. $50 is even too much. The most I will EVER pay for a game is $40, if it costs more than that then I’ll just wait until the price goes down and I can buy a cheaper, used copy. I’m telling you, the more they raise the prices on these, the less they’re going to sell and the more they are going to make gamers like me angry.

This is bad if true. After nintendo talks so much about development costs getting out of control so they design a console thats easy to develop for, then they price a game at the same price (or higher) as the consoles that are hard to develop for? Whats the point in having an easily developed platform again?
If it doesn’t keep the price of the games down, I don’t see the point.

Settle down you spazzes, Nintendo has already said first party games would be $50. The day that anyone turns to an e-tailer’s website for price, or release date info is a sad day.

games for 360 and wii should only cost 50 bucks since they arent on a new format. microsoft and nintendo are ripping people off.

Format has very little to do with how much a game costs. Even Blu-Ray discs are likely costing Sony almost nothing in comparison with the actual game.
