Video Games in “The Office”
Just finished watching tonight’s episode of “The Office” and found it hilarious to see Call of Duty figure so prominently in the plot. The premise was that Jim Halpert’s branch used Call of Duty as a “teambuilding experience.” As one who hadn’t really played video games, Jim had quite the struggle. Getting stuck in corners trying to shoot people with a smoke grenade. Using the Sniper Rifle when the MP44 would’ve been more appropriate. It was pretty funny.
It also reminded me of the many occaisions I’ve had a chance to place video games in the workplace. Doing tech support for Windows 2000, we had quite a few Unreal Tournament… uh… tournaments. Working at a dot com afforded the opportunity for some post-work-day fraggage in Counter-Strike. (I still have the screenshots from completely humiliating my trash-talking boss.) I also recall a few DotA matches.
Pleasingly, the new DEFCON game from Introversion has a “work mode” where the game lasts 8 hours, and hitting ESC twice instantly minimizes the game to the System Tray. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen “Boss Buttons” in my favorite video games.
I also think that World of Warcraft could be a good teambuilding experience. After all, endgame raiding can be a full-time job in and of itself. Then again, maybe that wouldn’t be such a good idea…
In any event, if you can somehow find someone who recorded the episode, I encourage you to check out tonight’s episode of “The Office”. Combined with last night’s South Park, it would seem this week is “video games on TV” week. Well, in a context other than someone killing people because they played first-person shooters.
