Eidos is reaching out to the Tomb Raider fan sites, according to a newsletter from Stella’s TombRaiders.net. Eidos PR Specialist Matt Dahlgren says that the Tomb Raider 10th Anniversary game is a tribute to the fans and will be out sometime next year. Eidos sent out a press release today, directed towards the fan community, and also provided the first screenshot of the game, shown above. Stella says it best, so here it is in her words:

As the game has evolved through the years, I’ve been a vocal proponent of the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” school. But times change, standards change, and the majority of gamers apparently want the latest bells and whistles. After all, games are a product and most have to be “cutting edge” to compete in the marketplace. When a game succeeds commercially, more games like it can be made. I have no problem with that. I’ve got a good graphics card and I’m willing to buy a new one every couple of years to meet Lara halfway.

But despite its graphic glory, to me Legend felt like “Tomb Raider Lite”. It has some nice moments, but the greatest challenge came from the new control scheme rather than the puzzles, traps or combat. Legend left me wondering if die-hard fans like me would ever recapture the glory days…wandering for hours in the tombs and ruins, evading fiendish traps, collecting keys and artifacts and trying to help Lara make sense of it all.

You all know that I don’t do previews and I don’t recommend anything until I’ve actually played it myself. So please don’t take this as an endorsement. But I am at last looking forward to a Tomb Raider game again, and I wanted to share my anticipation with you.

That is great news. I highly recommend Stella’s site for Tomb Raider walkthroughs – I use it myself and she writes the best walkthroughs I’ve ever seen, including screenshots of difficult jumps and color-codes the enemies and items.
