Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Splinter Cell: Double Agent Achievements Revealed… kind of

samfisherdoubleagent.jpgSplinter Cell: Double Agent, destined to be my favorite Xbox 360 game until Halo 3 comes out, has its achievements listed on Xbox360achievements.org. Interestingly enough, a huge portion of the achievements are of the secret variety.

What’s really great about these achievements is that they aren’t the boring “Completed Stage 6″ variety. Most of them are actual achievements like finishing a level without being detected, complete the game with best ending, etc. etc.

Although I guess the secret achievements could be story completion milestones, but that would just be… really lame.

I saw this over on 1up, and they also astutely observed:

There are plenty of Achievements to be had, though the value of some of them is a bit questionable. Completing both training missions in solo mode is worth 40 points, the same amount awarded for completing solo mode on Hard. That better be some damn tricky training, is all I’m saying.

Which is true, I guess. I typically don’t pay too much attention to the point values, though. I pretty much consider all achievements to be equally valuable. This is probably due to my preference for “completing” a game as opposed to just racking up points. Either way, seeing the achievements for Splinter Cell has made waiting for it that much harder.

I don’t know about everybody else on here, but I live the concept of achievement points. I think it is as much of an innovation in gaming as anything going on right now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked for the Wii, but I just love the added element of achievements. It takes a game and makes it deeper with very little extra work on the part of the Devs. I REALLY hope Nintendo and Sony implement something similar. Once you start playing with them, you really notice when they are gone.

I absolutely agree 100%. I love achievements. When I get a new game, I actually look through the achievements to help me decide how I will play the game. I’m not sure I would’ve even bothered with the Call of Duty 2 single-player, if not for the achievements.
