SIXAXIS Is Worst Next Gen Controller

IGN was given some time with a Sony rep’s debug PS3 and they’ve scribbled down some early impressions. The somewhat surprising news that came from their time with the system was that the PS3 controller pales in comparison to the Xbox 360′s pad.
I read in an earlier hands-on report from PSM3 that they felt the SIXAXIS controller had their fingers, “sliding off the shoulder buttons,” but didn’t clarify much more than that. I have read elsewhere that it took a little while to get used to the PS3′s ultra-light design alongside the wonky rear triggers. IGN’s recent comments went way farther than any of that.
IGN states that the SIXAXIS, “feels cheap, plasticky, uncomfortable and disconcertingly light,” and they were upset that Sony hadn’t spent as much development time on the PS3 controller as they did for the overall PS3 hardware, which did impress them.
Aside of the general feel, they also felt that the shoulder buttons themselves were hampered by positioning and finish.
“Trouble is, they’re placed almost unnaturally low meaning we found ourselves operating them by jamming our fingers in between the hinges to apply pressure, rather than using the buttons themselves. What’s more, the triggers are convex, with no grooves to keep your fingers in place – an issue further compounded by their smooth finish, offering no resistance against your finger tips.”
I disagree with them when they refer to the 360 controller as “uber-comfortable,” because I think it’s too thick and it’s definitely too heavy. I do feel that until we can handle a controller coming out of the box of a final, shipped PS3, it’s hard to judge. However, so far the PS3′s controller is coming in dead-last in every hands-on preview I’ve read.
