SIXAXIS Is Worst Next Gen Controller

IGN was given some time with a Sony rep’s debug PS3 and they’ve scribbled down some early impressions. The somewhat surprising news that came from their time with the system was that the PS3 controller pales in comparison to the Xbox 360′s pad.

I read in an earlier hands-on report from PSM3 that they felt the SIXAXIS controller had their fingers, “sliding off the shoulder buttons,” but didn’t clarify much more than that. I have read elsewhere that it took a little while to get used to the PS3′s ultra-light design alongside the wonky rear triggers. IGN’s recent comments went way farther than any of that.

IGN states that the SIXAXIS, “feels cheap, plasticky, uncomfortable and disconcertingly light,” and they were upset that Sony hadn’t spent as much development time on the PS3 controller as they did for the overall PS3 hardware, which did impress them.

Aside of the general feel, they also felt that the shoulder buttons themselves were hampered by positioning and finish.

“Trouble is, they’re placed almost unnaturally low meaning we found ourselves operating them by jamming our fingers in between the hinges to apply pressure, rather than using the buttons themselves. What’s more, the triggers are convex, with no grooves to keep your fingers in place – an issue further compounded by their smooth finish, offering no resistance against your finger tips.”

I disagree with them when they refer to the 360 controller as “uber-comfortable,” because I think it’s too thick and it’s definitely too heavy. I do feel that until we can handle a controller coming out of the box of a final, shipped PS3, it’s hard to judge. However, so far the PS3′s controller is coming in dead-last in every hands-on preview I’ve read.

I heard that in a Swedish Gamingmagazine they put all current-gen controllers (+ the 360 controller) through a test with a specialist in ergonomics.

The Xbox 360 controller won hands down in every category. The GameCube came in second. The (small) xbox controller third and the PS2 controller finished last.

It is proven (in Sweden) that the PS2 controller design is the least ergonomic.

actully i justb ought 2 ps3s and the controllers are actually quite comfortable and and and most likely my finger havnt slipped of theonly way that happens is if decides to dip your hand in some kind of slippery substance. So all in all i give the controller two thumbs up but you will just have to buy one to see for yourself. Just rember dont always beliave what you read

Ive got to Say, I loved the PS1, thought the PS2 was quite good with some good games, but the PS3, Urgggh……..
I have to say The Xbox and the Xbox 360 had fantastic controllers both fitting perfectly into my hands (I have really Big hands!)

Nintendo Have also been the best for Me, i Owned a Sega Mega Drive, then A n64 then an Xbox and then a wii (Couldnt afford a 360 last year!)and the controller is Incredible, its so comfortable and really good for people with one hand for the games without 2 hands! (Im glad im not one of them!) So i Rate the Sixaxis as 3/10, Xbox 360 as 8.9/10 and Wii remote as 9.2/10. tis good!

I was actually really glad when I got my ps3 that the controller design was pretty much the same as the other ps controllers because I have always liked the layout (incindentally, I do have smaller hands)and I like how light the controller is. However, the l2 and r2 buttons are placed in a way that if unless you lay the controller down carefully, the buttons will get pressed…for the most part however I like the design.

The PS3 style controller has stuck with me, and I’m glad they have taken away the boomerang shape of it and go with the classics. It is extremly comfortable, and why is it so bad that it is light? Is the no-rumble feedback so awful that everyone has to beat down on sony? No. Wii doesn’t have the Rumble, and to he best of my knoledge, the 360 doesn’t either, or at least it is VERY weak. The 360 controller is a clone of the First-gen Xbox, and it still feels very uncomfortable. Thank you, have a nice day.
