Release The Hounds!

Chromehounds_boxart.jpgI just fired up Chromehounds for the 360 yesterday. I know reviews for the game were less than impressive, mostly bashing it for a disappointing single player mode. I have read, however, that if you plan to dedicate your time online, it’s well worth it. So far, I’ve been running through the campaign mode and I’d have to say I’m enjoying it.

One particular mission in the Sniper campaign had me perched on a hill across of a river in the dark of night. On the night missions, the lighting effects of the weaponry reflecting off of the hounds is excellent. This isn’t the most gorgeous game on the market, but when it tries to be pretty it definitely succeeds.

The level design goes from either barren and boring to gorgeous, lush green fields to snowy peaks of death. The collision of the mechs with the environment is generally pretty believable. Trees will normally fall as you’d expect them to when a mech walks over them, but occasionally a mech will just be awkwardly bumped sideways instead. Also, walking into civilian vehicles will just make them explode underneath you, I would’ve rather been able to stomp them like Godzilla, but I guess that’s pretty lame on my part. Walking over puny infantry, however, is quite satisfying.

After I feel I’ve gotten ahold of all the different mech types, I plan on diving into the online play. If any of you have advice for a Chromehounds newbie, or want to invite me to your clan, don’t hesitate to drop a comment.
