PS3 may have cooling problems

An Associated Press story mentions that a PS3 overheated at the Tokyo Game Show. Sony was quick to downplay the issue, mentioning that the PS3 was in a kiosk, and thus airflow was restricted. The Xbox 360 launch brought about some overheating concerns, and we could expect the PS3 to have them too. The problem is that more-powerful chips in smaller spaces add up to less room for airflow and heatsinks. This could be compounded by the fact that the PS3′s power supply is located inside the console, instead of in a separate box on the power cord like the 360. And while it may be a coincidence, Sony is the manufacturer of all those recalled laptop batteries, due to overheating. Let’s just hope the PS3s don’t catch on fire, or melt their intermal parts!

For some stupid reason, I have faith in that hardware.

While its not uncommon for first gen hardware to have issues, this is still a little bothersome.
Have they even confirmed that the PS3 is in mass production yet?

Combine that with the fact that I never really liked my original PS2 and I have issues. I always felt like the original PS2 was so big and clunky, yet flimsy at the same time. On the contrary, I am absolutely in love with my slim PS2 that I got as a replacement when my original PS2 went belly up. Its so tiny and quiet and the buttons are so small and acute. I don’t know why it is but it just seems like its everything my original PS2 was not. I fear that the PS3 may have similar issues for me. Its so fucking big. Obviously its going to run hot as hell.

Hopefully it won’t be as loud as the 360 but who knows. As much as I’m dying to get rolling with Motorstorm, Assassins Creed (I know it will be on 360 too) warhawk, Resistance and a few others, I just can’t stop thinking of what the nonexistant SLIM PS3 would look like. THATS the next gen machine I want.

On a side note, I’m slightly concerned that my Wii may fornicate with my slim PS2. You know they say the Wii is “always on”. :/

Broken PS3s… that’s not new or anything. PS1 over 300,000 systems recalled because of overheating and some even starting fires. PS2 nearly half a million systems sold within the first two years had overheating issues and Sony did not offer to repair quite a few of them. PS3 is no different.

Also keep in mind that the cell processor is easily broken. Overheating can cause a cell to blow and if you only have 7 cells in your PS3 processor, one blows and you’re done completely. PS3 is a disaster just waiting.

There are no “hardware problems”. Put any console or electronic hardware in an enclosed environment without proper ariflow and it will overheat.

That’s what happened at TGS, nothnig more.

    Armin,

They said the same thing about the 360, and now microsoft is replacing units for free because they finally admitted that there were hardware problems. This is not uncommon at launch. Companies do the best they can to test the hardware before it ships, but there is only so much they can do to test. Launch hardware issues are not nearly as important as how the company handles them.

As for putting consoles in an “enclosed environment”, sure, thats not a good idea, but they should certainly be designed to survive in an average entertainment center. My opinion is that if you know the device is likely to be stored in an entertainment center (which consoles obviously are) then you should design them such that they can handle it. I have had all my previous consoles in my entertainment center with no difficulties. I expect the same with the next generation of hardware. This isn’t unreasonable.
