NewsWeek Writer: Gears Writing Is Atrocious!

Submitted by on October 27, 2006 – 10:41 pm9 Comments

writing_contest.jpgI am all for people expressing their opinions about games but recently I read a small article done by N’Gai Croal of Newsweek and it just left me dumbfounded. He states that the dialogue in Gears of War is atrocious. Personally I have heard every bit of dialogue released thus far, and while it might not be oscar worthy it is by no means atrocious. The acting suits the mood and feel of the game very well I thought. N’Gai Croal for the most part is positive about the game I just find it stupid to cry over something you have barley seen.

He also states that the PS3 game “Genji: Days of the Blade” matches the graphical prowess of Gears of War. I have seen Genji a few times and it comes nowhere close. This statement alone makes me realize why we should never read Newsweek for gaming info, and that N’Gai Croal needs a pair of glasses and possibly a hearing aid!

You mean you WERE reading newsweek for gaming info?

That may be part of the problem. :)

  • Richard (AeroPause)

@Subnet6 – NO I was not looking for game info at Newsweek, I stumbled across the link in a forum.

I have also heard some dialogue. The guy’s half right: it is pretty campy. An unfortunate side effect as we strive towards more realistic games.

  • James

The dialog isn’t great but I’ve heard worse.

If you look at some of the voicework that is done in many games today you would never complain about Gears of War. So far we have seen very little of the actual voicework so making an opinion of it now seems a bit harsh.

I imagine N’Gai might have already played more than we’ve seen. He’s one of the most influential game writers around, so it’s not like he’s just writing something baseless.

  • Tucker

Since when is N’Gai considered an influential Game writer. If you ask 1,000 gamers only 3 might even know who he is. He is in no way influentail. Plus he even said he hasn’t played the game yet!

  • Tom O

Ah, well then, that proves that I should read articles before commenting :) And I really meant “influential” in the sense that publishers see him that way. Sure, most gamers won’t have read his work, but if you check the average review-copy and/or press-junket-invitation list, he’s probably on there.

It does make me wonder why dialogue is often so dire even in big-budget titles. If video games can match films in terms of visuals and sound, then why is it so difficult to make the writing up to par?
