New compression technology shrinks files 70%

allegorithmic.jpg While I’m still not keen on the idea of disc-less games (for reasons I’ve mentioned before), this new compression technology would make it a lot easier. It would also enable a lot more game to be put on one disc. The compression programs are called ProFX and MaP Zone 2, and are by a company named Allegorithmic. They claim that the programs shrink texture files by 70% while not decreasing their graphical quality. Apparently, Allegorithmic showed an XBL game called Roboblitz running on the Unreal Engine 3, and the 50MB game’s texture files were a mere 280kb. (Since I don’t know a lot about texture files, I’ll take PS3 Fanboy’s word that that’s impressive.)

There’s no definite answer on when we could be seeing this technology – the company indicates that people are being retrained to use the new techniques. I’m also not certain that this technology means that game developers will go to the cost or trouble to add in three times as many textures either, but we’ll see.

nice article. I can see these programs used in the future but not for ps3 games. The ps3 with the Blu-Ray drive has way more than enough space.

For Microsoft these programs could be used to great effect. Seeing as every ps3 fanboy wants to throw the limited disc space a DVD9 disc has. with programs like this and future programs that are sure to pop up as needs arise disc space really won’t be that big of a deal.

I think im one of the few people that have continually pushed the point that compression technology will continue to get better. I can see that the DVD9 format will be way more than enough for what game developers need for the next 4-5 years.

technology like this just further proves the point that Blu-Ray is not needed… at least in this point in gaming.

So this article proves once again that Microsoft made a smart choice in sticking with the standard dvd format and over charging it’s gamers with un needed extra’s…aka Blu-Ray
