Microsoft Warranty Repair Shipping: No Longer Free

Submitted by on October 17, 2006 – 5:45 am7 Comments

xbox360insides.jpgOne of the posters at EvilAvatar.com apparently had an interesting conversation with an “Xbox 360 Hardware Supervisor”. Microsoft is no longer going to pay for shipping or do any kind of cross-shipping for Xbox 360 repairs. That’s too bad, as here I was thinking this was actually one decent thing that Microsoft was doing. Well, here’s what Chris (id#: 201780) had to say:

It is the responsibility of the customer to pay shipping costs for the repairs.

If you want any repairs at all, you must pay shipping.

Warranty items will not be cross-shipped.

Customers were not informed of this change in the warranty process unless they called in and request another repair.

Any customers who paid for repairs on a console with a Manufacture date in 2005 will be recieving a reimbursement check sent to their mailing address listed on their account.

I am aware of pending class action lawsuits against Microsoft concerning the 360 console hardware and I do not wish to comment on them.

I do not wish to have our conversation recorded. It’s just against company policy.

Yeah, I bet you don’t want the conversation recorded…

What’s really despicable about all of this is the whole “We’re not going to tell customers, just let them find out the hard way.” Wow, that’s some great customer service. Guess the cat’s out of the bag now, eh Microsoft?

Update: I just got off the phone with Xbox Support, and “Rosalyn” confirmed all of the above information for me. “The policy for shipping warranty repairs HAS recently changed.”

Its things like warranty services that I love living in the UK, by law all manufacturers must supply a 12 month warranty compared to the 3 month that you guys get, plus as far as I am aware the shipping for UK repairs is still free.

That’s funny, I just sent one in that was my fault for breaking and they are paying for everything. Probably need to look into this more!

Would the program that they have setup up for refunding repair costs on cover shipping?

It really wouldn’t matter I always get the extended warranty from the store that I purchase electronics from so I can get a replacement right away vs waiting for repairs.

Though I can’t speak to MS charging for shipping, my 360 had recently become ill and it took 2 weeks for Microsoft to simply send me the empty box to ship the damaged console back to them in. After numerous calls there was no effort made to expedite the process or offer anything but an apology for shoddy service. Really not an Xbox fan right now.

I’ve been waiting to hear some news about a class action suit. Has anything been made public about this?

The fact is, xbox 360 malfunctions have been normal statistically for console launches. Everyone should just shut up, remember PS2 launch? A ridiculous number of those broke, and I’m betting we’ll see lots of PS3 malfunctions.

more ps2s broke because people actualy bought them. in fact, less 360s were sold in its first 11 months than dreamcasts were sold in its first eleven months!! every person I know who bought a 360 has had it brake on them after one day of use but then again i only know one person who was dumb enough to buy one.

I have just started a Yahoo group to try to address the lack of appropriate response by MS to the problems some of us are having with system failures. I will be building and adding content to it as quickly as possible. I am inviting anyone here who is interested, to join or contribute to the effort. Even if your system has been satisfactorily replaced or repaired, your input will be valuable to those of us who have not received a fair shake from MS. Anyone who has links, pics, personal stories, etc
