Halo 2 = 4 Billion Served

Submitted by on October 31, 2006 – 1:51 pm4 Comments

Halo 2 screen.jpgToday Bungie has released some impressive stats for its widely popular Halo 2 online. As of today over 4 billion games of Halo 2 have been played. Personally I think that I count for about half that number…give or take a few billion. They are also quick to point out that they are near 4 million unique users, which means nearly everyone who plays on XBL owns Halo 2 and has at least played online once.

With these kind of numbers it’s easy to see why Microsoft wants to get Halo 3 out as soon as possible. Early estimates from Microsoft and several financial websites claim that the release of Halo 3 could sell at least 2 million consoles, possibly a lot more. There is no doubt that Halo 3 will be a hit but I wonder what game for the PS3 will ever live up to the online accomplishments of Halo 2.

I think Microsoft is reliant on Halo to a fault. They need to create a First Party draw.

I’m having a hard time believing these statistics. If 4 million users have played 4 billion games, that means that each user is averaging one thousand games a piece.

Now, I’ve played my share of online FPS games, and I don’t think I’ve ever played more than a couple hundred games of any single title, and even that is a fairly huge stretch. Is the average Halo player really rabid enough to generate these kinds of statistics? Or are there enough insanely-rabid people bumping up the curve, playing Halo 24/7 for months on end?

If you figured it came out almost 2 years ago:

    2 x 365 = 700 days

    1000 games /user
    divided by 700

comes out to be 1.45 games per day. That isn’t a stretch. It is a large number, but I know I’ve gotten schooled by some people in matches that lasted all of 2 minutes.

I have played over 3500 games of Halo 2 since it came out… I’m good but there are dudes who are even more hardcore than me. So its not implausible for some gamers to have upwards of 5000 games.
