“Enhanced” Wii to Launch in ’07

Remember this thing? Hideous.

According to this news, waiting out on a Wii purchase makes a whole lot of financial sense. Apparently Nintendo is planning to release a DVD-playing Wii in 2007. I know the system is only $250, but can they really justify releasing a new system already? DVD playback isn’t all that necessary but it does help buyers replace a piece of hardware in their living room. I use my 360 for DVD playback because, well, it’s just a hell of a lot easier.

Even still, it’s not hard to imagine Nintendo dropping a new system on the market next year. They’ve shown that they can be successful with it in the handheld market, so who’s to say home console buyers aren’t suckers too?

I wonder, though, if this is going to end up being like the Panasonic Gamecube mashup that had DVD playback abilities. I don’t think that thing sold much AT ALL. I’ve already got a buttload of appliances that play back DVD. Heck, my fricking microwave comes with DVD playback, now. Yeah, I dunno. We’ll see what Nintendo does.

I really, really wanted one of those. They just look so awesome. Oh well.

Also, keep in mind, DVD playback may not be the only “enhancement”. I’m guessing at the very least, this will be timed to coincide with the release of the Wii in black.

Personally, I want more features to do with the games. Don’t get me wrong, I like nintendo a lot, but I wish they would put more power in the Wii. Its processor is less powerful than the Original Xbox’s.

The DS Lite was launched barely a year after the DS.
