Microsoft is planning the release of a software upgrade this fall to the Xbox 360. The upgrade will ramp up the current resolution limits from 1080i to 1080p, meeting the top specs for the PS3, at least for movies. Unfortunatly, no news yet on what games might take advantage of the 1080p resolution, if any, or whether Microsoft is going to make HDMI a possibility in the future.

Alongside the “1080p for movies” statement, came an official Japanese release date of November 22nd, 2006 for the Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon. The external HD-DVD player, a NON-HDMI device, will retail in Japan for 20,790 yen ($177).

More to come.
