Whoa!? Far Cry Wii Looks Like Trash!

    By James Munn | September 21, 2006

    farcry1_thumb.bmp

These new screenshots released for the Nintendo Wii version of Far Cry are horrid. I absolutely cannot fathom how this game could look below Gamecube quality.

These 3rd Party developers better get their acts together and fast. The Wii can’t survive on First Party alone.

Wow, are those images from the leaked ubisoft stuff, I hope so because these look like pre-alpah images all the way!
    • They really don't look THAT bad. I mean if the gameplay is smooth and consistent it should still be a good time... and the controls could be really sweet.
      What do you expect?

You people just don't get it! It's all about gameplay!!1

      Ugh..That's really fugly.

I've seen posts on other websites using these screenshots as proof that the Wii's (pun not intended) graphics are crappy. This is not so.

When comparing this to other screenshots and videos we've seen from Wii games, it is obvious that these shots are not the result of the hardware. We've seen better. And as you said, the Gamecube can do better.

Indeed these 3rd party dudes need to get a move on.
    • Koskun
In this day and age, while you can say that it is all about the gameplay and how it will control (more so on the last one with the Wii's controllers) for a launch title the graphics better be something to write home about.

Even with that said, graphics anymore are what will make or break a game in the end. Next Gen console equals, in a lot of people's minds, next gen graphics.
    • Chugaboy
But the point of the Wii is not to have amazing graphics. They've said this from day 1.

They are targetting a market who is more about gameplay than graphics.

I fit in this nitch myself.

I'd still to this day would still rather spend my time playing a 4 multiplayer game of Goldeneye over Halo 2.

      Disagree? That's ok too.

But Nintendo will still sweep the market on this one. Sony.. even with its new price drop is going to fail swiftly. I still have my money on that it wont release till 07' for the US.

      wake up.

regardless of how important gameplay is, the "candy", such as graphics and sound, are important as well.

take a movie, such as lord of the rings, or the matrix, or anything else. if the special effects, acting, sound, and overall presentation was bad, would this hurt the story? of course not, but it would sure as hell hurt the overall movie.

quit bitching about "those people who think next generation means great graphics and that's all" and realize the importance of presentation, which complements the gameplay.
    • yo
gameplay is so much more important than graphics, take Chrono Trigger for SNES f eks, still one of the best games i ever playd
    • Chugaboy
I can appreciate good graphics. That's what P.C. games are for :)

I just don't feel like spending a grand on an already dead technology like blu-ray.

It's over priced and its going to fail.

I'll spend some pocket change on a party system like Wii... and I'll stick to my graphics on the computer.

      Fair enough?

Wow this looks horrible , I remember quake 2 looking better than this. Unless that environment is fully destructable , it had better look a lot better before they release anything... actually even if , it had still better look a lot better. Ubisoft and FarCry are known for their awesome graphics , so they can get their act together on this one. With that said I saw FarCry on XBox for about 20 seconds and thought it was butt ugly as well
    • OMG WOW.. I can see the pixels!!

Its all about the game play people.. if they had to drop the pol-count to increase the FPS, I really don't care.

plus the game isn't a launch title.. so we can hope it improves from these shots.. plus they don't look that bad!
    • Shaft
Yes but for it's time Chrono Trigger's graphics were quite amazing. It came out shortly after Final Fantasy 3 (6) and had better graphics. Both were two of the top 10 games ever made. My point is that while control and gameplay is the most key element of a gaming experience, the graphics have to at least be on par with the current generation's capabilitys. Lets hope that these guys pull their act together and the finished product looks alot better than this. Gamers have come to expect more.

      People:

The game is far from being ready for release.

The STANDARD thing to do in the GAME INDUSTRY is to use LOW RESOLUTION TEXTURES for TESTING development code.

      Many reasons for this:
keeping the project resources at a minimum, so you don't have to worry about complications and after-thoughts such as compression, figuring out what texture detail suits the system for a reasonable framerate, performance and load testing. blablabla

I would not worry. It's like a painting. At first, it looks a lot like gobbledigook and washed out colours, and eventually the finer details are put in for the last touch.
    • Thater
I'm not terribly worried about it. For one they're porting an engine rather than building it from the ground up for the Wii so it's going to lose a lot from that. Also, Farcry isn't fun. Other games look pretty decent and I think over time it will improve as developers become more familiar with the systems architecture.
    • George
Lol, Jellygraph it's amusing to see you grasping and making up utter shit about the game development process, in your efforts to justify these shots.

That said, they are unfinished, they weren't meant to be released. Plenty of games look "horrid" during their development and before their unveiling to the public. I'm sure it will improve, though "by how much?" is a different question altogether.

Same image as the first one in the post

It shows that the first picture in this post(and probably all the others), has been zoomed and cropped (and then saved to a BMP...wtf).

So tell me again why I should trust anything you say about the quality of the Wii?
    • DrWho
Face it, the Wii is over priced for sucky grapics. Oh, but you do get to wave your arms about and poke your little sister in the eye while acting the fool. Lawsuits coming.
    • Albaster
"Far Cry: Wood-Hands"... hadn't hear about this one, but such a premise is really innovative! I was starting to get tired of all those FPS with hands made out of human flesh...

      ...

Sarcasm aside, I'm guessing it's a really early beta... Just look at the projected shadows on the floor in the first screenshot... It's absolutely pixelated... Even the Gamecube can pull off projected shadows way better than that. I'll also guess that they are first adjusting the gameplay and level design before implementing the bling-blings and the pretty textures... Something similar happened with Red Steel, after all.

Why can't the Wii have graphics like the PS3? Or the PS3 the controller of the Wii?

I'm so frustrated. I want top notch graphics AND fun gameplay Wii Remote-style!

Why are they forcing me to choose one or the other.
    • haha
it's really simple actually, if you want to stare at nice graphics, then PC, if you want to wave your arms around like a jerk, than Wii, if you want a stylish paper weight, PS3, if you like seeing circles constantly light up, 360.

Your options couldn't be any more clear.
