Sensorama!

Let’s file this one under “Ultra Retro”. In 1962 the “Father of Virtual Reality”, a Cinematographer named Morton Heilig invented and patented the first VR, interactive motorbike game called the Sensorama – sounds like a 1950′s-60′s name to me, kind of like “Neatorama”. The device had a 3D motion picture with smello-vision like the smell of flowers and (baked pie?), stereo sound, vibrations of the seat, and wind in the hair. It sounds tacky but I’m sure it was cool at the time, to some. It also helped launch the whole arcade-VR game revolution, but sadly Morton couldn’t get funding for this project and the motorbike game crashed ‘n burned. So sad, maybe it was the smell of crap as you drove past a field of cows.
