Killzone Liberation Attempting To Thwart Piracy?

Normally, there’s nothing positive about buying a game that needs to be patched soon after release. Killzone Liberation for the PSP, however, seems like a slightly different story. Shortly after it’s October 31st release, Guerrila Games is going to make a plethora of content available for download from their official site. While downloadable content is nothing new for the PSP, the entire online multiplayer feature being part of a download is definitely new.
Because of this, it’s hard not to think something deeper is going on here.
Killzone LIberation will ship with only an Ad-Hoc multiplayer mode on the UMD and to play online, gamers will need to download the infrastructure piece from the Killzone website. At first, I instantly assumed that the reason for the online mode not being available on the UMD was because development was behind schedule. Now, I question whether offering online multiplayer as a download is actually Sony/Guerrilla Games’ attempt at thwarting piracy.
Sony might assume that if they force users to authenticate with their DNAS before downloading the content, they can force a user to legally obtain a copy of the title compared to downloading an ISO. While I doubt the homebrew community won’t be able to come up with a workaround, I’m still intrigued to see if this is Sony’s plan for Killzone Liberation. If so, we can only assume it would carry over to future titles as well.
On a lighter note, after playing through a demo copy of Killzone Liberation, it’s hard not to be excited about sinking my teeth into the full version. The game feels like an overhead, 3D version of Metal Slug, mixed with a little Metal Gear Solid minus the stealth, which to me kicks all kinds of ass.
