Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames

Whether we like it or not, most video games are getting closer to movie productions in many ways, but the stories for most games suck. That’s where this new book, a first of its kind, which came out in June titled: Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames comes into play. It suits beginners and experts in the field of game writing and teaches you techniques that help hone your narrative skills. The articles are written by industry pros so the book has qualified merit. One element the book contains is teaching you how to craft a compelling character, which interests me. I definitely feel there’s a lot more room for character development in video games. Perhaps once we achieve this movie-like level of production, then people will start to feel a closer bond to characters and maybe even cry? That’s just what David Cage of Quantic Dream, the company behind Heavy Rain wants you to do is have feelings for the character.
You can grab the first chapter for free from Gamasutra where they also review the book in its entirety.
