FCC PS3 Papers, What Does This Mean?

There have been many questions posed about the meaning of this recently released image of the PS3 papers that were submitted to the FCC. In the above image it states that the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules built in to the PS3 do not transmit simultaneously. We do not want to cause an uproar but we would like to know if anyone out there who knows about this would be willing to tell us if this means that the wireless controllers and the Wi-Fi cannot be used at the same time. We highly doubt that Sony would make such a grievous error but our inquiring minds just wont rest until someone smart schools us on this matter.

Not to worry. The reason the two radios do not transmit at the same time is most likely to be sure both work well, otherwise they will interfere with each other.

yes worry. if both won’t work at the same time due to interference or whatever it is – not working at the same time is a huge problem! and lame! if it proves to be the case that is.

The bluetooth radio transmits for only a few hundred microseconds, even shorter if using EDR. The other time periods can be used by the WiFi radio.

Also, bluetooth has something called AFH and will not use wifi channels it can see are in use.

WiFi and Bluetooth share the same band (2.4Gzh, i believe)and having both running together can cause interference (basically a slower data transfer rate.) This was one of the major hurdles on Bluetooth taking off. I haven’t heard about that in awhile and so I thought new technology resolved the conflict.

I’m not sure if these modules “not transmitting simultaneously” is what we think it is. It might be the method in how they co-exist without causing any slowdown in data rate. Maybe they stagger the transmission?

As far as I knew, the only WiFi connection the PS3 had built-in was for a connection to the PSP and nothing more. Maybe you can’t connect to the PSP via WiFi and use Bluetooth at the same time?

  • nizzk

it could be possible that the bluetooth is only a reciever and the controller is the only thing transmitting. p.s. still not buying one

Sony what on earth are you playing at?

Without both working simultaneously online gaming would be impossible

The radios will probably alternate xmit recv so that only one is bursting power at a time. What the FCC paper shows is that both radios will not be bursting at the same time. It will help with the fact that they are going to be using frequencies that are very close to each other. This technique has been used in radio devices for a while.
