    The Anatomy of a Fanboy

    By Richard Windsor | August 7, 2006

    fanboygeorge34567.jpg
I have long been fascinated with the mindset of a hardcore Fanboy. Not the ones that promote their console as the best or just love it to death. I am talking about the ones that brush aside the competition and refuse to think other gaming platforms are worthy of playing. This is why I decided to take a satirical look at the anatomy of a hardcore fanboy. What makes them tick and why? So I sat down and had some die hard fanboys answer some questions in order to see the method behind their madness.

Ever since man made the very first console there has existed a seedy under-culture of gamers. These gamers have chosen something to stand by forever, and no it

My last boyfriend was such a damn fanboy. He would go on and on about his playstation being the best. God I am glad I dumped him!

    • funny how when asked about competitors consoles, the sony guy commented on xbox and the xbox guy commented on playstation...

great article... you're just missing one thing at the end: nintendo is the best and anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron!

      -"superfan" tactics.

Nice article. You nailed the symptoms of fanboyism in a humorous way(the onyl way to handle something so ridiculous). Gotta say I was a little disappointed that there was no discussion of the cause or cure. As a recovered fanboy myself, I've gotta say the thing that finally woke me up was the realization that I was so worried about which company was winning the console war, but I honestly couldn't say why (I was confronted with this a number of times before I got it).

Most fanboys are the way they are because they get some of their sense of identity from their console of choice. So growing out of it usually only takes time.

HEY, I know that I am pathetic and I am proud of that, god I need a girlfriend!

The cure is easy, GET LAID!
    • Nuisance
Well, one things for sure, all those consoles suck, the Phantom Game Service will beat them all... eventually.

      Heh, nice article. Sadly true...

There's more to it than that. You missed one question I would have asked.

"What would make you want to play (competition)?"

The first thing you may notice is the silence. Afterwards, they will insult the competition instead of actually giving an intelligent answer. They may say something like "maybe if Sony bought them so they made games for my system" or "if they were not the suck". After that, they would probably immediatly shift back to what makes a "true gamer".

By the way, ever heard of the "no true scottsman" fallacy? This reminds me of it. Basically the fallacy is when someone in a debate constantly redefines, or refuses to concretelly define, something so that every time you come up with an example of something not being as great as they say it is, they just move the goal posts and say "well that wasn't a good exampe anyway". For example, a scottsman reads the paper about a random killing in Normandy and says "no scottsman would ever do such a thing". Next day, he reads that a scottsman did such a thing, dressed in a kilt and doing it with a bagpipe (let your imagination flow with that concept, roll it over your prefrontal cortex to savor the experience). His response will be to redefine scottsman by saying "well no TRUE scottsman would ever do such a thing".

Have these guys define a gamer from the very start in a concrete manner, or any time you point out a gamer that enjoys other systems just as well, they might point out that person "isn't a true gamer".

However, I will say this, it sure reminds me of the religious (or spiritual if you prefer) sorts arguing about who's god (or cosmic force or karma or whatever) is more powerful yet more loving.

I'm just afraid of the day when some fanboys progress to performing violent acts against people that don't agree with them. Armed nerds screaming "SONY OR DIE" probably isn't too far-fetched an idea with some of the more extreme nerds out there.

Holy shit that was funny! Nice article, I laughed my ass off at all the truth put forth through that piece. The only wall of text worth reading today!

      so true....unfortunatly...
i respect each console..i just like nintendo better...i cannot afford a ps3 and my best friend has a 360, so nintendo is a natural choice..

Human nature and ignorance.. aren't they great?

Any fanboy of any particular platform that calls themselves a gamer really, REALLY needs to be shot. Or at the very least have something horrible done to their eyes.

A real gamer would not be bias to any platform, format, or game in general. A Gamer exists to play games, and thus any person that truly wants to be considered a gamer needs to own ALL the available hardware, and thus would have access to ALL the available games. You're first reaction to that is "That's expensive!" Well that's bullshit. If you're a gamer, you'll get a fucking job, save your cash and buy the hardware.
    • gamer andy
I have to admit I a Sony fanboy but I own an xbox 360 and I love it but that not going stop buying a Playstation 3. A for the Nintendo Wii you can stick that piece of crap up your ass, the controller looks shit and probably give you RSI after playing with it for a couple of weeks. As for PC's I would rather spend $3000 on a good used car than waste it on a system that would be obselete a year. Consoles rule.

P.S the nintendo wii is for 5yr olds to play pokemon on.
    • PolarBoy
whoa there gamer andy! Being a sony fanboy isn't going to stop you buying a PS3? You may be the most open-mided person here.

Also, consider. If the Wii is for 5 year-olds to play pokemon on, why are grown men getting excited about playing Red Steel, Metroid Prime: Corruption, Project H.A.M.M.E.R., and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on it?

So while I respect your opinion I still think you're overlooking the basic fact that when applying actual reason to the problem the only justifications for not having every single console are the space and money required. And while there is something to be said for console monogamy (For the price of a Wii I could get 4-5 360 games, for the price of a 360 I could get 4-5 Wii games, and for the price of a PS3 I could get a 360 and a Wii) it doesn't really provide any justification for looking down on someone for choosing a different console or set of consoles than you.

Wait a minute, it all came clear just now. You were that guy standing in line behind me at Taco Bell yesterday. The one telling me what an idiot I was for ordering a hard taco instead of a soft one. Grow up.

P.S. I know I was a little hard on the PS3 there. Rest assured it was only for the castigation of Gamer Andy. The Wii still has a stupid name and the 360 is still large and hot enough to have it's own solar system.
    • Ephraimsglory
And in the biz, gamer andy, this is when we like to say "Oh snap!".

Excellent points there polarboy. And for my opinions? I'm getting the Wii cause it looks kinda interesting, and I don't think I could afford a PS3 or an Xbox 360 (friend has an xbox 360 anyway). However the xbox 360 is really fun once you get into it. Fanboys tick me off...

P.S.- For the record, I have a gamecube, a playstation 2, and all together we have about 6 microsoft computers hehe.

Thus concludes my really unimportant post.

Hmmm am I a fan boy seeing as I'll be a Wii60 owner before the year is out? (GOD I HATE SONY) lol
    • Red_Breast
I know it's being a bit blunt but doesn't it come down to intelligence and their lack of it?
      Simple as that.
