Phil Harrison, The Gilligan of Gaming

Submitted by Richard Windsor on August 9, 2006 – 9:36 amComments

philgilligan.jpgEver since the debacle that was E3. Phil Harrison has managed to make himself and to some degree Sony look like blabbering fools. Why does Sony keep letting him speak? If this was politics he would have been canned long ago, locked up tight in a bunker and never heard from again! For some reason Sony is content on letting him run around stuffing his foot farther and farther back in his mouth!

Phil reminds me of Gilligan because he is the comedic relief that gets us through the day. He is the scapegoat for the rest of the cast (Sony) and everything seems to be his fault, even though the blame lies with many. Phil has what I deem the worst job at Sony, the fall man.

The PS3 will be a good machine, even though it may be overpriced, but every time Phil speaks we have to hear comments like

  • jonathan
u know why did sony even join the console market they shoukd just staid w/ tech and stuff and their psp sucks the graphics suck too the only good thing bout it is the internet ability it has
  • It used to be that sometime in November Canadians could flatten out the snow behind the house, let the water hose run for a few hours, and get a nice flat sheet of ice...
  • I'm going to respond to George becuase I appreciate the way he laid out his points in a reasoned, intelligent manner.

"1) "This is my personal view, not my corporate view, ..." (Then Sony does the same exact thing, ouch!)

He gives his personal view, and then corporate disagrees with him. I don't see the contradiction."

While this may not make Phil actively dumb, it only reinforces the point that he isn't a very good spokesperson. When you step into that role, everything you say is representative of the company; like it or not, your personal view is the corporate view. That's PR. When you publicly state that you disagree with your company's policies (retroactively or otherwise) it's bad for image and leads to... well, scathing editorials on influential blogs, for starters.

As for the other quote, I really don't see what that means in the context of Live Anywhere. I'd say that it makes even *less* sense, actually. Is the PS3 a cell phone too?
  • Greg
Lots of Sony hate these days. Some people need to grow up, as they can't handle that Sony is No. 1.

Who are they going to attack next in the Sony Corporate hierarchy?

By the way, just to piss you off even more, Sony is No. 1. LOL!

My god these comments make me laugh. I work in the games industry for one of the largest companies. We have many PS3 and 360 titles in dev or planning right now and I can tell you a few factiods.

    1) The 360 right now is the most powerful peice of kit around. This may change in the next 3-4 years when devs get fully wise to the cells. However right now the cell is a bastard to develop for and has too may bottlenecks and memory issues in comparison to the 360. Also given Sony's poor dev support that won't change overnight.
    2) In terms of graphics the 360 is ahead. it has twice the phyisical RAM and more power to move that info
    3) In terms of framerate until point 1 is forfilled the 360 will be better in this area in most games.
    4) Support - Microsoft are bending over backwards to support the developers on 360, Sony however are not and are nowhere near as ready to launch a platform given a comapriosn at the same time as last year with the 360.
    5) Microsoft have the online arena all to themsleves. The Sony solution is poor like the PS2 and the PSP interface bolted on doesn't actually do anything to help that.

Given those 5 facts in near term the Ps3 will sell out in the first 6 months to Sony Fan boys, who will be disappointed with the poor software and hardware support from Sony.

The real test will be Xmas 08 when the Blue Ray platform will have either died or survived and all 3 platforms will have had a few killer titles to view.

Georgey boy it does not change the fact that he said it, the implications of what he says reverb throughout the company. In what context it is said is irrelavant, plus you are wrong about how he said them anyways!

If your view is personal or corporate it does not matter, its still a view amd what he said was still stupid. I also dont remember the article ever saying HAHA you retard, that what us people with and education call rhetoric. Look it up GeorgeyBoy! You seem like the real loser here!
  • PAINPAINPAIN
Phil Harrison is the Fanboy's fanboy. Arrogance personified and a c**t to boot. The "PS3 is a computer" rant he mentioned is a well-known way of Sony to tax-dodge on importing their consoles. Sony have always been bullishly arrogant when they feel threatened and this is no exception. Keeps the shareholders happy.
  • George
I think you're being unreasonable with a number of your quotes:

    1) "This is my personal view, not my corporate view, ..." (Then Sony does the same exact thing, ouch!)

He gives his personal view, and then corporate disagrees with him. I don't see the contradiction.

    2) "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

This was a response to a question about whether Sony felt they were disadvantaged by not being able to do the Live Anywhere thing Microsoft had just announced.

I agree that he's a fool in many ways - his gushing over the controller demo at E306 was particularly disgusting. But it's sloppy writing to take quotes out of context and then go "HAHA you retard".

I can't wait to rape fanboys on ebay for $2500 PS3's this Christmas.
  • Phil Harrison
Geez guys give me a break will ya. I have to deal with Crazy Ken all day. So I say some stupid things every now and then, it's not like I get paid for it, OHH WAIT!
  • Sony are big liars, especially when it comes to the PS3. Phil is not the only one involved in the terrible reputation that Sony has built for itself. Take a look at Sony's words before this year's E3.

The PS3 will have 2 HDMI outputs! They've only got one, oops.
A Gigabit Ethernet port. Nah, just a plain old Ethernet port sorry.
Built-in Wifi! Not even close. PS3 will have the same ethernet port as the Xbox did and that's IT!
Looks like they dropped the 7 controllers per console too, in favor of their competitor's choice of 4.
And it didn't come in Spring either, did it?
  • thesecretsafe
Sony priced the console at $500 and $600 and everyone is upset because they dont want to pay that much for a system that everyone wants.
That there is some brand loyalty from 360,Nintendo,or Sony fans that makes them attack a competitor with the fervor usually reserved for poltical opposition is ridiculous.
When people cry about the price, ridicule marketing strategies, and attack the executives it just seems to reflect how many people are interested and really want and will buy a PS3.
Most gamers more than one console anyways.
I own a GameCube and a PS2 and like them both for different reasons but never seriously think of 360 like an opponent I want destroyed.
The Wii may very well be revolutionary.
It certainly will sell in big numbers this holiday.
The PS3 however with the cell processor and large storage capacity of blu ray discs will set a new high mark for video games(you know the future and all that)..
Every one wants in on that.
The japanese market certainly wants that.
The PS3 may be $600 but to me that just means it will be even more desirable as status for people until every one has one, there is a slim model availible to pimp your ride with and nobody even cares about the long ago pre launch spin.
I just want all the console released already so we can just enjoy them because all the stupid jabs from blogs but more especially coming from the of all 3 console makers is getting tired.

Nice comments Jay, I wish I would have found a few of those!
  • jay
Nice detective work. Most people don't seem to mind when suits are completely full of shit. I posted an article with a lot of Harrison quotes a month ago here.
  • Duane
HaHa you are so on the nose, neither MS or Nintendo have someone out there saying stupid things. You dont see bill gates saying " The Xbox 360 will be able to create balck holes"
  • omgwtfsonysuckslol
Sony wil toatally suk madd donggz. et iz too xpensiv and noone will buyu tha crap. xbox will pwn u silly lol.
  • Skyelan
Okay, check it out, I'm not going to bash the PS3, and I do plan on picking up one up (once it drops way way way down), but some people (the ones saying the PS2 sales are proof that the PS3 will excel) need to pull their head out of their arses.

Wait, you mean a 130 dollar system with hundreds of critically acclaimed games is outselling a new, 400 dollar system which is only just getting its bearings? STOP THE PRESSES!

Clearly, a system selling for cheap with tons of great third party games (most of which are at budget price too, mind you) is an indication that a 600 dollar system that 3rd parties are giving halfhearted support at best, and jumping ship at worst, is going to be a BILLION TRILLION seller.

    Great logic!
  • Tad
JR, Sony may have sold 107 million PS2's but that number is the biggest misleader ever, with the redesign and the high numbers of consoles that were defective it is easy to see that there is not 100 million people with PS2's the number is more likely around 50 - 75 million.

Oh and by the way, the competition is not non-existant, saying that shows your intelligence.
  • jr
WHY DOES EVERYONE SUSPECT SONY TO LOSE. THE JULY NPD NUMBERS ARE OUT AND THE PS2 IS STILL ON TOP OF EVERYONE INCLUDING THE 360. regardless if what phil says is right or wrong he has the right to say what ever he wants without fear because theyre dominating the almost non existant competition. If you check wiki youll see that the ps2 has SOLD about 107mill surpasing even the gameboy wich was redisigned several times

I think Anonymous is a fanboy, didn't you read their fanboy article?
  • Anonymous
Hey Anonymous, you have to be the biggest loser fanboy I have ever seen. THe article is satire you dip! I guess you have to graduate grade school to get satire huh!

    Anonymous = Sony Fanboy!
  • "the PS3 is going to be a great game machine"

Oh yeah. You can just smell the anti-Sony bias there.

**"Ever since the debacle that was E3. Phil Harrison has managed to make himself..."**

Just because, his information was wrong, it doesn't mean he should be "locked up tight in a bunker..."

**Phil reminds me of Gilligan because he is the comedic relief that gets us through the day...**

What the hell is this about? Biased crap.

    **
  • Richard
Bias, do you know the definition of that word? I have nothing against Sony, I simply made a point about their PR man. If you can find an example of Nintendo or a Microsoft employee sticking their foot in their mouth as much as Phil, I would be glad to post it!
  • Tyre
Ok, james how are we supposed to take it, enlighten us on your inside info! because your comment sounds like fanboy garbage.
