Japan’s Arcade Games

060725_BradJapan_hsmall.widec.jpgThere’s an interesting article on MSNBC Newsweek about arcades in Japan where there’s an estimated 9,500 outlets and more than 445,000 game machines. Compare that to 3,000 arcades in the US, down from 10,000 a decade ago. This decline is due to home consoles here in North America like the Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo which don’t require us to leave the sofa. The article points out that the Japanese youth, most who live at home, aren’t working despite the job offer pamphlets littered on the arcade floors. The kids just want to spend all their money and be the Tom Cruise of arcade games like Gundam or Mobile Space 0079.

Being a DDR champ in some of these arcades is bigger than being a movie star. It’s not their addicted to the game, they’re addicted to the fake fame.

Yeah, it’s just like anything else…alcohol, drugs and gambling. The Government needs to regulate this crap if they want to get the kids working. It’s so ironic.
