A few weeks ago my wife and I were in a local park and witnessed a group of people dressed in old Knight’s uniforms complete with chain mail as well as Wizards and other centuries-old outfits. We wondered what the heck they were up to, why were they fighting with swords? Is this for a movie? Later we found out that it’s a group of LARP’ers or Live Action Role Players which is a live theatrical role playing game. Think of it as a active form of World of Warcraft or Guild Wars if you will – or perhaps a glorified version of Dungeons & Dragons. LARP’s will design their own character and an imaginary world then either battle it out or just hang out and talk shop in an alternate reality. There are ranks to think about too: You have your GM’s (Game Masters) NPC’s (Non Player Characters) and PC’s (Player Characters). To me it just sounds like a lot of work but I guess it’s that social acceptance and comradery that makes it worth while.

You can learn all about this game on How Stuff Works.

I used to LARP for a few years, but non of that mediaeval nonsense. Straight up modern vampire (or werewolf) LARP for me, thanks very much. :)

Yeah, that doesn’t make it any less dorky Brinstar!

hahahaha …. wow. You have to give these people credit because, I sure as hell would not jump around a park in pajamas and plastic swords. They ovbiously don’t care what people think or say about them, and for most people thats pretty tuff.

Trish: LOL. As much as the vampire LARPers like to claim that they are less dorky because they happen to LARP in places like pubs (at least in the UK), they are every bit as nerdy. Role-players first, actors second, in most cases.
