PS3 price could be its Achilles Heel
In an article in the UK games industry publication MCV, analysts at DFC Intelligence suggest that price of the PS3 could be what sees it relegated to third place in the next-gen console wars. While this isn’t really news to us on the ground, it’s interesting to see it being reported in influential trade rags.
What really tickled me, though, is this quote about abandoning mainstream gamers by going solely for the hardcore dedicated gamers with very deep pockets. They say this new business model is like “Coca-Cola not only deciding to go with a new formula, but also deciding to exit the low brow soft drink business, to go into high end wines [instead].”
I think they’ve hit the nail on the head. Sony are so wrapped up in the idea of technical perfection and using that as a potential selling point that they’ve missed what’s made the Nintendo DS outsell their (apparently technically superior) PSP – fun games to play! Two gazillion polygons are all well and good, but I’d rather whack that Wii remote about than have streaming video wrapped to Lara Croft’s VPL in high def.
