Oh no, not another magazine! I really like visiting magazine shops, it’s hard not to get carried away in one of them and end up shelling out at least $25 on just 2-3 magazines these days. Game mags are especially pricey because some come with a demo disc or you’re mostly just paying for the colours and paper. I know this because my wife used to work for a very popular magazine and it’s insane how much publication fees cost these days. Even all the compensation made from advertising isn’t enough to keep a magazine on the shelves for too long – you need excellent syndication.

There’s a lot of magazines out there and they all compete with one another for the best grade of gloss, artwork and editorial. I’ve been leaning towards PDF magazines these days though because they’ve been improving dramatically and they’re free! Take Play.d for example – issue two is now out and it’s loaded with 68 pages of news, previews, reviews and pretty damn good articles every 2 months. I really liked their Retro section where they review and just chat about the good ol’ games of yesteryear. Being an experienced Graphic Designer myself I thought the layout, colour palette and designs were above par – and this aspect is important to me. And it’s all free!

Anyway check it out, download the PDF and give ‘er a read or print it out on your cheap printer/expensive colour cartridge contraption.

Thanks, Ant’

Not bad, but as far as online magazines the only ones I really read every time are The Escapist and Gamer’s Quarter both of which are always incredible.
