Never Before Seen Retro Game Consoles

You may have witnessed the next-gen console size dimension chart on Aeropause before. The char gave you an idea of not only what the size comparisons are but what’s out on the market, or soon to come out these days. As if you didn’t already know that.

However, turning back the rare, oddity game clock leads us to a sweet collection of consoles that a lot of us haven’t even laid eyes on. The niche game site – ASSEMbler has a huge list of dev units, prototypes and unreleased imports for our viewing pleasure, and some of them are just plain out there! I myself have seen a couple of peculiar dev kits floating around, but for the most part it was a fun and new experience glancing at these plastic, prehistoric play machines.

Take the M82 for example. It was a demo NES unit back in the early 1980′s which allowed people to try out games before they bought them. It was rack-mounted with a monitor, had a time limiter and could house up to eleven games. It reminds me of a web server from the early 1990′s or something. Quite archaic indeed.

Okay yeah but do they have a Brazilian Sega Master System for girls, and does it come in pink? You bet! This iteration of the Master System was actually wireless and would ouput the video signal to your TV at close range.

pink_kitty.jpgBrazil even had a Hello Kitty Dreamcast, if you can believe it.

There is such a huge aftermarket in Brazil where retro consoles and games live forever, they release weird hardware (to us anyway) that is exclusive to Brazil. There’s even an excellent video game documentary about gamers in Brazil called ” Gamer Br”

Check out ASSEMbler for the rest of the strange, never before seen video game consoles. Let’s breathe new life into these cool, campy systems!

I’ve seen the Nintendo M82 before. It was the basis of an arcade machine as well – the PlayChoice-10. My sister-in-law had one in her pub about 13 years ago. Instead of paying per-game, your 10p (the UK’s equivalent of a quarter in arcades) bought you 300 seconds of gaming time. Completely bizarre.

You’d think being in my early thirties I would have seen some of these, but only a couple! It’d be cool to have an M82 in next-gen console form. Imagine being able to play 11 games on the fly like a disc changer. Very cool.
