Rumble Box

Rumble Box is a fantastic little game to kill half an hour with, and being free, it’ll only cost you whatever it costs you to download 12Mb of indie game genius.

The idea is simple – take on opponents (hence “Rumble”) and try and get out of a box (hence… you get the idea). But this is no latter-day Pit-Fighter, no sir. The twists are two-fold. Everybody is made out of really simple blocks, strung together with invisible elastic, and when you knock you opponents out their bits of body hang around in the box. You have to get out of the box by walking over the severed limbs of your stylised protagonists… nice!

It’s not perfect – there’s no joypad support, for example – and the difficulty gets pretty steep, but the visuals and soundtrack are wonderful. There’s also something really quite satisfying about grabbing hold of an attacker by the head and swinging him around violently to knock out his gang!

At precisely nought pence, this offers infinite value for money for some much needed, short-and-sweet, beat-em-up fun.
