Gettin’ yourself a nice wee little Shuttle PC with quality video-out might be just the solution. I mean, with that many consoles in your living room, what’s 1 more small device? Then you can get your linux on and play any format known to mankind AND dvds, if you so choose.

Okay, I didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers about the Wii. But there have been no official announcements about ANY of the Wii’s media capabilities. If Nintendo announces that the Wii will do more than play games and support DS games, etc. etc., then I will consider it more than a game machine.

Again, I want to reiterate that I am really excited for the Wii. I don’t need it to be a media machine, but I do really want at least one of my consoles to be able to handle my media needs. I don’t expect the Wii to do that.

IF it can play DVD’s, I’ve already got three consoles that can do that. Not a big deal, especially since Nintendo hasn’t considered it a big enough deal to announce any media features.

Fact is …
There is noway rootkit creator like sony don’t do “DRM and format restrictions”.

Linux on it can’t redeem the tools of ps3 is restrictions to any non license by sony programmer. for ps3’s DRM.

Also linux programmer don’t like sony. fact sony don’t handed dvd’s driver or tool to make driver for linux. Now it’s played but using “other way”.

Thay also don’t like HDMI on back of ps3 that do restrict on user. And also no driver or tool to able to used it.

also i don’t think bd will have any help form sony for pc’s linux too.

Wii can play dvd. maybe music cd too.
It’s also have usb hdd too. but we don’t know it’s function yet.

Transcode 360 still in Beta.

xbox360 bios already read able. and XBMC360 may come.

Re: article – I see the problem as an issue of what a console is “best suited” for. Basically, it doesn’t make sense to shell out too much for mediocre functionality.

I too want a little more out of a game system but not if it effects the games. The cell chip is not a good game chip, even some sony execs said so, its for media delivery, which is nice but does not help game code run faster. Sony handicapped their console and they are gonna pay for it!
