Famicom Disk System: How Game Pirates Got Their Start

Submitted by on June 14, 2006 – 2:09 pmNo Comment

famdisc.jpgAKA the Pocket Famicom in Japan. The first game on a Famicom disk was actually The Legend of Zelda back in1986. These disks were hugely popular in Japan back when the console era was dead over here in North America. They were popular because of the cost and ease of use compared to ROM. You could change the contents of the disk and they didn’t cost nearly 5,000 Yen like the ROM’s did. They died though because well, games got bigger, required more space and a naivety amongst Nintendo which lead to illegal copying of the disks (duh). Why didn’t Nintendo just flip that little black switch on those floppies which enabled write protection!! I remember those days. Perhaps this is how game pirating began?
