I took the advice of Tim Schafer, and sent an email to Microsoft letting them know exactly how I feel about the current state of backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360.

To Whom It May Concern:

No one gives a crap about Barbie Horse Adventures or Big Mutha Truckers.

I guarantee you will make a LOT of people happy if you just made these games backwards compatible:
Panzer Dragoon Orta
JSRF
Psychonauts
ESPN NFL 2k5

DO IT!

Well, lo and behold, I received a response from what I can only assume to be one of MS’s EMULATION NINJAS!

George,

We didn’t do anything to make Barbie or Big Mutha Truckers work. They just worked so we added them to the list. We call them “freebies.”

We are working on your favorite games. I can’t promise when they will be ready, but we are hoping to have some of these in our next release.

So, there you have it. I think with this knowledge, the criticisms about Barbie Horse Adventures are probably somewhat unjustified (despite being HILARIOUS). I’m also wondering which games they are working on at this point… Any of the games I listed would be welcome additions at this point (and long overdue).

However, by the same token, it is still completely misleading to say they’ve WORKED SO HARD on over 200 titles, when it’s fairly obvious that a lot of these titles are, as Alan puts it, “freebies.” And why are we still getting freebies at this point? Shouldn’t all of the freebies have been figured out in the first update? I guess I’m assuming that Microsoft has a room somewhere that contains every single Xbox game ever produced. After all, with the draconian licensing scheme that is required for even THINKING about getting a dev kit, I would assume that a copy of every game would be required for quality assurance purposes.

Who knows? Maybe Microsoft throws away pointless games just like I do. Which begs the question… how did they figure out Barbie Horse Adventures was a freebie so quickly? Perhaps Steve Ballmer has been staying up late with the ol’ Xbox…
