XBox 360: Hype is good

I just came across an interesting parts-price breakdown chart on the Next Gen website. The charts show a breakdown price comparison between the PS3 and the 360. The 360 wins by $155 less then its predecessor. The article goes on to say that Microsoft will have quite an advantage over Sony by the time the PS3 comes out. Microsoft’s deep pockets and a cheaper system could bring them out on top, even though they’re supposedly losing $126 on each system and even more, according to Kotaku. Now that suggested price for the PS3 came out to around $580 Cdn, without tax. We’re talking ~ $650 here and that’s just speculation. The games would really have to rock my boat in order to pay that much. Perhaps GTA4 would do it.

If you’ve been keeping up on the 360 news lately, it appears that there’s a lot of BSD’s and screen freezing going on. Even video clips of them in action. That’s not stopping people from paying upwards of $2500 on Ebay for one. That’s insane. What’s also insane is Hotmail email addresses like: “xbox360andmore” selling for $150! Then there’s the 360 snatching, which makes me shake my head in disbelief. People will even rob 17 year old boys for one. I guess this is what happens when the supply is short. Soon the hype will die down and the crazy money people are making right now will go away.

So with that, here are a few events that have to happen before I buy into the hype. Right now, it appears it’s as good as trash?:

-When the console actually works
-I can stroll down to my local electronics shop to pick one up without taking a number
-When the library grows a bit.

I’m actually finding a lot of these reports pretty dubious. It’s very difficult to nail down the kind of numbers that these companies get for these parts without having inside information. Just guessing from the hip based on retail prices is almost surely wrong.

And the recent reports that Microsoft is losing more on the 360 than on the original Xbox doesn’t sound quite right. Microsoft was extremely protective of the actual cost of the original Xbox and I think some analysts were guess in the excess of $200 or more, a record at the time.

Probably will poke at it when I return on Mon.

I mean the financial reports of course … I totally believe someone would punch another for an Xbox :)

Yeah it’s hard to say, really. I agree. Numbers get thrown around for news I guess.
