The Movies: Impressions

I’m seriously addicted to Peter Molyneux’s latest game creation – The Movies. The game is the first of its kind in the sim genre where constructing a successful movie studio is your main goal. I had the fortunate experience of seeing how tv and film productions were put together to some extent from working on Stargate recently. So I was somewhat prepared with how the Movie’s played out. That is definetly not to say you need to have a background in film production to enjoy The Movies. As soon as you dive into the game, it holds your hand like a Mother would a 5 year old kid; commentary, information bubbles, sparkly pointer streams – it’s all there. All that aid goes away though when you’re ready to take off your training wheels, but it really does help.
I wont babble on about the features, goals and detail such as that. But I will say The Movies is a great game if you’re into the Sim/Tycoon genre. The graphics and detail are decent and it plays very smooth. I’m at a point now where I’ve created 5 very short movies in the year 1926, I have a few actors, directors, an inexperienced crew – to which I can’t figure out how to give them more experience, a few sets, a production office and a few more odds and ends. It’s a lot of work keeping everyone happy, especially those egotistical actors.
If this game is successful, and I think it will be. Then Peter should develop a similar type of game, only call it “The Games”, where you have to create a video game company. Wouldn’t that be fun.
