Half Life 2: Lost Coast Impressions

Well I just went through the tour on the new Half Life 2: Lost Coast demo. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. It’s amazing what they can do with High Definition Range. One particular part that blew me away was, and I forget the technical term, when you leave a darker part of a room and enter a brighter part; that over exposure period when your eyes need time to adjust. You could see this transition unfold in front of you. It blew me away. I want to go back into the game and just sit there and stare. I had the game fully cranked at 1280×1024, except a 2x Anti Aliasing.

One indication of the talent behind the Half Life 2 development team lies in my CPU fan. When I load up a game like Age of Empires 3 or FEAR, my CPU of course has to work a lot harder and so does my CPU fan. When I was playing HL2: Lost Coast – the fan barely made a sound at all. And HL2 looked better! Go figure. I really hope there’s a Half Life 3 down the road.

Gosh that’s pretty. I wonder if you can just buy a steam key and start playing HL2, or if you have to buy physical media in store?

You can buy the game by downloading it from Steam I believe. Then with the Steam client installed, you can download this level. Yeah it is pretty, I need to get in there again and play it (for the 1025562 time). :-)
