Court Victory For White Collar Sweat Shops

sweatshops.jpgFinally the employees win! You may have heard of the EA spouse who was disgruntled, for good reasons as her husband was overworked and underpaid. The article was called “The Human Story” and can be found here.

I have just learned from Mercury News (registration required) that EA had to pay out a hefty 15.6 million dollars in money that some employees claim they never recieved for the countless over time hours they put in and did not get compensated for. Some of the employees like the entry-level artists will be paid on an hourly basis, which is awesome news. That’s how it should be!

I’m very happy to hear this, as I’ve been working in the tech/IT industry for the last 7 years myself and only once have I been compensated for all the over time that I’ve put in. I’ve become quite disgruntled myself. So good for them, they deserve all the money they get. Other game companies who don’t pay for over time should listen up.

I know someone who is an artist at EA, and apparently they “were the last to know” about the court ruling.

Yeah, I’m not surprised. The person/people who are affected, usually are the last to know. Maybe to avoid conflict?
