I’m a celibate MMO gamer no more

Well I played my first MMO today. I know, big deal right – long overdue. I took advantage of the ‘Guild Wars – ATI 10 free hours of play’ deal. I have to say, I was quite impressed. I can see why it’s addicting. I found it dead easy to play, loved the detail, music and characters. Don’t get confused with the previous entries on Guild Wars. I didn’t write them. Those were written by my the great Dave – “The Demo Review Guy”. He’s all over Guild Wars like raging kids over the nanoPod.

Look for my strikingly handsome, swash buckling character: “Aeropause Games”. It’s quite a creative name, I know.

Onward!

You too, huh? I played this pretty much all weekend long. My experiences with MMOs has been less than stellar, but just their no-monthly fees was enough to warrant a purchase for me.

If blogger starts to behave, I’ll have a rantier review on CT. Have you decided whether to purchase the full version?

    Hey Josh!
I’m not sure how many more free hours I have left on the thing but I’m only a level 2′er. I started to realize that I’m only fighting computer controlled baddies and not other people. It was only in the towns that I could interact with other folks. So I think this is a demo thing only, but not sure.

If I were to play an MMO such as this one where I could actually fight other players or ‘PVP’ as they call it, I might like it more and find it intriguing. With that said, I think I’ll put this demo of GW to rest as I just can’t get into it with only the option to fight the computer. I may in fact have missed that PVP option in the beginning however, I’ll have to investigate.

Ultimately I’m not much of an MMO guy. I love the games that stick out and keeps it exciting, like Indigo Prophecy or AOE3. I’m a sucker for the WW2 FPS’s. I tend to have a short attention span for games unless they grab me in the first half hour. Kind of like a movie.

GW supports a couple of PVP options. It sounds like one isn’t there at all … where can create a lvl 20 char and it’s a PVP only account. The other is where your PVE character can enter the arena for some fun. I’ve only scratched the surface of it, I guess, because there’s more complicated modes I haven’t tried which sound a lot more like tournaments and extended campaigns.

I prefer coop anyway though. GW reminds me deeply of Phantasy Star Online, which was probably my biggest Dreamcast timesink.

Oh ok, well now I know. I should see how much GW’s costs here. If it’s not too heavy I’d like to pick it up and try the PVP out. I never played Phantasy Star Online either.

I’m looking forward to that new fantasy MMO (the name of it eludes me right now). The video clip had a fellow running down the stairs and hacking a beast with a sword. (Amazing visuals) And another clip of him running up some stairs. Hmm I wish I could remember the name. I think I even blogged about it. It’s hard to think of this stuff when you’re at work and there’s distractions ;-)

You can’t play PvP in pre-Searing from what I can tell… But once your characters cross over, I think you can go to the arena. I haven’t ventured forth to the fighting place, because I am kind of scared to fight real people. LOL. Plus, I’m having too much fun playing co-op.

It’s true for the full version that you can only interact with people in towns. I think that’s why some people don’t classify it as a ‘massive’ game. You can’t randomly bump into other players when on a quest, and some people don’t like that.
