Gametap: say goodbye to snail mail

gametap.jpgForget what I said earlier about the wave of online game rental sites popping up and the whole – getting heavier because you don’t have to go to the movie shop anymore to get your game(s). Now there’s Gametap? I wasn’t aware this was even in the works. That’s the beauty of the net isn’t it? You may here snippets of news here and there about a new service coming out, but really you don’t because the interweb is so huge. You’re left thinking “eh, where the heck did this site come from?” If it was a tangible business; one that you could walk by everyday and think – “oh, they’re putting up the drywall now honey, the sign says they’ll be open in 2 months…ok”. Then that would come as no surprise. But Gametap, is the idea really new though. Downloadable games have been around since the internet and video games coexisted. However web-based, easy to use services aren’t all that new. It was just a matter of someone with the resources putting the two together.

For those who don’t already know, Gametap is a subscription service that allows people to download all sort’s of games. If you sign up now, it’s free for 1 month and then $9.95 for 3 months. After that it’s $14.95/month. The games are actually downloaded to your computer. How does that work with piracy I wonder?

My guess is Gametap contacted the companies and threw down the deal. They wouldn’t be able to start letting people dl’ games for their price with out consaulting anyone first. As for the idea of paying a monthly fee and dl’n tons of games, you would have to have no life for that. I would probably only download 1 game ever 3-4 months at the rate, since I don’t game so much. But hey all you virgin keyboard cowboys, this sounds like a wet dream for you.

Yeah you wouldn’t be able to download these games unless you pay a monthly fee as you do with Gametap.

I work for Game Tap’s tech support team. How you get the games are you actually download them to your pc via broadband connection. The games only work going through the GameTap software though. Our games are completley as they were on their original consoles. All the bugs and cheat codes work as they did in their original form. We add games to our library on a weekly basis and all the games licenses have been bought so we have a lot more control over other companies that run emulators. We are a Time Warner company. Right now we have a Christmas special going on. $9.95/month for the first 12 months and $14.95 there after. So come check us out at http://www.gametap.com
