Have no Fear – first impressions

Well I had a go at the new FEAR demo. I have to say it’s a pretty decent FPS. I quite like the flexibility in the game. Save whenever you want, change the difficulty on the fly if you feel it’s getting too hard and of course the Max Payne-like slo-mo feature is very nice to. Graphics are top quality however I must admit I am growing tired of the old warehouse, industrial, basement themed settings. How about a supermarket? Or an abandoned fair ground? FEAR also comes with ragdoll physics and just about every object is interactive in the environment. I did like that there was a lot of action and it was CREEPY in some parts. Even playing during the day, when you least expect it you get blindsided by the paranormal. Yikes, the little girl freaked me out! Another thing that jumped out at me and said “Hey! Check this out man!”, was the AI. Those bad guys were quite smart. Jumping in and out of windows trying to flank you, hiding behind walls and only sticking their guns out. Those kind of intelligent aspects got my attention.

What I didn’t like and it’s minor is the game seemed to chug when you turn a corner or open a door. Almost as if it’s loading new textures, sounds et cetera. I initially had this problem with Half Life 2. Although I’m sure when FEAR goes gold, it will be remedied.

I would pick up this game definitely. Tell me what you thought of it. Look for FEAR on the shelves on October 11, 2005.
