Guild Wars: Never Just A Second Class!

This article is ironically my second article about Guild Wars and is all about some good suggestions for your character’s secondary class. All characters in Guild Wars have to have a secondary class to compliment their primary. For example, this means that if you make a Warrior, you could choose to become a Warrior/Monk and become similar to a Paladin (fighter/healer).

Check it out and for all you GuildWarsians, tell me what you have had the best luck with and/or found the most useful.

This is just my opinion from my experiences with the game and should be used as a guide only (or to create some controversy).

Warrior: I have found the best warrior secondary to be Monk. The reasoning behind this is self healing and a skill called Mending. Mending regenerates your health which can be handy when you are forced to run out of healing range of the monks to get that annoying caster hanging out in the back.

Elementalist: I would have to say the best would be the Mesmer. A small amount of attribute points into your Mesmer attributes (mainly Inspiration Magic) can give you the necessary energy stealing to allow you to cast and keep casting those expensive Elementalist big hitters.

Mesmer: A solid Mesmer/Elementalist combo is great. Put in a couple attribute points into Fire and Arcane Echo or Echo two quick Meteor Storms or Fire Storms and you’re in damage heaven. As another possiblity I have seen used to great effect is Mesmer/Necromancer. This type of character is referred to as a “DOT” build. “DOT” stands for “Damage Over Time”, and relates to the health and energy degeneration skills that the Mesmer and Necromancer have access to. Laugh as you see the enemy’s health bar rocket down!

Necromancer: A tough call, but in the game climate currently, if you are not a Blood Necro then you aren’t going to get into a party very easily. My own Necro is a Blood/Curses Necro/Monk, which allows me to cast some good area based healing spells, as well as use Blood Ritual to keep the other casters energy up, and still have some impact on the damage side. The Monk side allows the Necro to take the burden of ressurecting fallen members of the party (after defiling their corpse with a Well of Blood or Well of Power of course muhhaha :) away from the Monk primaries, which I have found to gain a lot of thanks from the party.

Ranger: For the Ranger, I would have to say the best combo I have seen is Ranger/Monk as it makes you more self-sufficient on the battlefield for very little investment into the Monk side. Healing Prayers and Protection can go a long way when you are the character that is continually asked to pull the monsters towards the party.

Monk: Last but not least, the Monk. I know I will probably take some flack for this, but I really don’t think it matters what you put in as your secondary. I have yet to see a Monk character do anything other than use Monk based skills on the battlefield. I have a Monk and as your character is the medic in the game, you are constantly watching health bars or making sure that your protections are still on (and watching health bars), you have little time for anything else realistically (all those damned other characters always trying to die, so inconvinient).

That’s all for now, if you are playing Guild Wars, I hope you are still enjoying it. If not, get on the boat, it’s a hell of a ride!

My main character is a Necro/Mesmer, and I am not quite sure what to specialise in. Her attribute points are pretty evenly dispersed on both the Necro side and the Mesmer side.

I have two friends who have just started Necro primaries, and both of them went for Monk secondaries. Both of them are specialising in Blood Magic and Curses.

I just started a Ranger, but I have no clue what to make her second profession. I am considering Necromancer, and although the Necromancer is my favourite profession, I would like to try something new. We shall see.

I’ve also started a Mesmer, with the intention of making Necromancer the second profession, just to see the differences. Fast Casting is wonderful, but being able to cast spells quickly just means that I burn through Energy that much faster. I’ll see how I get on.

    Hey Brinstar!

Glad to get the comment from you about my article.

My Necromancer is the same as your friend’s ones.. Blood and Curses with a little Monk thrown in. I have found that I am still in fairly good demand for parties which is why I made the recommendation. How is your Necro/Mesmer getting along? Are you using the DOT build that I described in my article?

As for a Ranger secondary, I had a Ranger/Mesmer that I didn’t think turned out well (I took him up to Ascension)… as a suggestion a Ranger/Necro with some Death magic could raise a pretty nice meat shield infront of yourself :) .. Oh on the Ascension note.. you can’t take a pet in with you to battle.. tried it with my Monk/Ranger and got schooled cause I had a bunch of pet attacks in my slots… grrr..

I found my Mesmer/Necro ran through energy super, super quick.. I have a serious complaint about the Mesmer as a class.. they give you fast casting ability, then penalize you with huge recharge times on the useful spells and gigantic costs for the heavy hitters (Cry of Frustration, the most useful Mesmer spell in my opinion is 15 energy and has somewhere near a 30 second recharge.. what were they thinking?!?!).. 10-15 points per spell fast casting means your energy doesn’t last well, especially when you are in Hall of Heros trying to shut the other team’s casters down… it is hard to forget how many times I have been caught with my pants down in the middle of a battle praying my energy recovers quickly enough :( Not to mention that the Mesmer doesn’t have a good healing spell.. Ether Feast is godawful and recharges way to slow, so I was having to rely on Vampiric Gaze and that is still pretty small health recovery but recharges fast enough to be useful. For your Mesmer I would STRONGLY suggest getting a staff or wand or off-hand item (or both) that gives you increased skill recharge for your Mesmer skills. I’m not trying to be down on Mesmers, but it isn’t a hard class to play and timing your interrupts is really fun and keeps you on your toes… but the simple fact that you can’t interrupt enough to have a real impact on the battle makes the Mesmer class really low on people’s lists for party members in most quests, and I found myself cursing the game makers way to often with “BUT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INTERRUPT THAT!!! ARRGHHHH!”.

Well that’s a good enough tirade for now on my part. Hope you are still enjoying the game! Any more questions or comments or problems, comment again and I will give you my best advice!
