Games to movies: Dungeon Siege 2

Yet another movie based on a game. Dungeon Siege 2 is filming on the same location where I work on the Sci-Fi show Stargate SG-1/Atlantis. With that, there’s a new demo out for the acclaimed action-RPG Dungeon Siege 2 from Gas Powered Games and Microsoft Game Studios on Fileshack. The movie from Brightlight Pictures is slated to be released in the spring of 2006.
Brightlight also has the rights to produce other game-to-movies like Boll KG, Hunter The Reckoning, Far Cry and Fear Effect.
Another game movie to note is Mortal Kombat 3. Yes, another Mortal Kombat movie is in the works.
“Meanwhile, Threshold Entertainment, which is planning to film “Mortal Kombat III” in Louisiana, is interested in building out 100,000-150,000 square feet of production space that would double as a tourist attraction.”
I’m not sure about Far Cry as a movie personally. The plot wasn’t all that compelling. It was fun to run around and look at the delightful and luscious landscapes. I honestly cannot think of any games that have a great story which should be converted to a movie. Maybe because that hasn’t been the focus of games when they’re developed. It’s all about the gameplay first, graphics second and the story third. I think the only reason right now for porting them to movies is because they’re popular and a cash cow.
