EA needs a few good innovations

EA-logo.gifThere’s an interesting article on NYtimes regarding EA and their reputation for dishing out sequels instead of new innovative titles. It was stated that this is the reason why EA is losing profits. This was the first time in 30 years that they actually lost money.

“By year’s end, Electronic Arts plans to release 26 new games, all but one of them a sequel, including the 16th version of N.H.L. Hockey, the 11th of the racing game Need for Speed and the 13th of the P.G.A. Tour golf game. The company also relies heavily on creating games based on movies like the James Bond and Lord of the Rings series, rather than developing original brands.”

Geez, the “16th version of NHL Hockey?” That’s insane. Maybe the Godfather will put them in the right direction. I’m looking forward to that one as I was a huge fan of Mafia. I’d have to agree though, they really do need something new.

I agree that the 16th version is a bit much and truth be told, as they have not added any breakthrough features that make the game much better for a long time in my opinion. The graphics get better of course, but the game is still just a basic game of hockey. What I would think might make more sense is release a new graphical breakthrough every couple of years and in the mean time just have a pay subscriber list that mirrors the real NHL team rosters and deals, as well as adding new inventive and fun content (mini-games, etc.). I’m not saying the NHL series is dead, but is feels like it is getting to be an old repetitive concept for the game.

There is so much more that they could be doing with their games, but EA seems to be in a comfort zone with many of their “series” games that unless they get more creative will cause them to continue this downward trend and the NHL series is very good example of that.
