Designing the XBOX 360 interface
Design Interact has a great article on the design process of the XBOX 360 user interface. I frequently visit the site myself as I am a Graphic Designer by trade. Russ Glaser is the interface design manager at Microsoft and was responsible for overseeing the 2 year project.

From what I have personally seen through video clips of the interface in action, I quite like the simplicity of the menus. Of course I haven’t had the joy of experiencing the navigation yet like like this kid did. Alas in due time. Russ had to take into consideration that this next Gen console was not just a gaming machine but an entertainment piece.
The way I like to explain it is that the first [Xbox] was kind of like the Hulk bursting through a wall says Glaser. Xbox 360 is more like Bruce Lee. It’s about drawing in, inhaling. The goal was to take the original design and to use a more elegant style that keeps the edge of gaming
